The dictionary meaning of jealousy (Hasad) is: ”Strongly wanting someone else’s position, advantages or possessions.” Hasad means to envy the other person for XYZ reasons or no reason (not an apparently clear reason). Following are some signs of hasad and if you find any of these symptoms in yourself the one thing is understood YOU NEED TO GET RID OF IT.. And how?? Well, we’ll discuss about it too insha’Allaah… So, here are the signs:
1) When someone gets something you get inflamed.
2) When you are unable to hear the other person’s being praised.
3) We you feel angry whenever t(shaitan)hat particular person came in front of you.
4) You easily get offended when someone praise that person in front of you.
5) You start wishing bad for that person (intentionally or unintentionally).
WHY TO GET RID OF IT??
Hasad (destructive jealousy) is one of the biggest diseases of the heart which should be eliminated as soon as it enters our hearts.. You wash your hands and face many times a day isn’t it?? Likewise, you should keep your heart clean, since this is what Allah looks at.
It was narrated in al-Saheeh that Abu Hurayrah said:
“The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Allaah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
(Narrated by Muslim, al-Birr wa’l-Silah, 4651)..
Hasad is a sifat of shaitan. Shaitan envied Adam (A.S). He couldn’t stand the fact that another being (a human) could be the mehboob of Allaah (swt) How could a human (who is created out of clay) be close to Allaah (swt). If we also have a hasad like this then this is a shaitani type of hasad… And how dangerous it can be we can imagine that.. This is a terrible disease that causes a great deal of harm in this world and in the Hereafter.
Al-Tirmidhi narrated from al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awaam that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“There has come to you the disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair, but that it shaves (destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread (the greeting of) salaam amongst yourselves.”
(A hasan hadeeth. Jaami’ al-Tirmidhi, 2434).
Note: Concerning the meaning of the phrase “it shaves (destroys) faith”, al-Tayyibi said: “i.e., hatred takes away faith like a razor takes away hair.” (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi bi Sharh Jaami’ al-Tirmidhi).
WHAT IS THE CURE??
1) Changing the thinking process:
The first step is to change our way of thinking. We need to realize the ugliness of this reality that we aren’t actually jealous of that particular person but instead we are upset with Allaah because HE is the one who did the takseem (i.e Allaah (swt) is the one who provided that person with that specific blessing) We have to flush those feelings out of our hearts.
2) Looking Down Upon Our Hasad:
We have to look down upon our hasad, should HATE this envious feeling that we hold in our hearts. And we should try to eliminate it… We clearly need to realize and BELIEVE that Allaah (swt) always give what is good for us…
3) Exchanging gifts:
Hasad is the result of hatred, whose opposite is love, the way of which is giving gifts and spreading (the greeting of) salaam, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread (the greeting of) salaam amongst yourselves.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 81).
If you feel that you are jealous of a specific person, then buy him a gift and shake hands with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Shake hands, for this will dispel rancour, and exchange gifts and love one another, for this will dispel hatred.”
(Narrated by Maalik in al-Muwatta’, 1413).
While doing this Shaitan will for sure whisper in your ear but you need to concentrate on the fact that you are doing it only for the sake of Allaah…. NOT for the person, NOT for yourself. JUST AND JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAAH (swt). Triple check your intentions..
4) Make Dua:
As someone has greatly said ”One of the greatest gift you can give someone is dua and the purity of your attention”.. And Dua is THE MOST AFFECTIVE way of curing this deadly disease. Make a sincere dua for the person you envy. Remember that person in you sajood and pray for him/her, make the dua for that person and ask Alllaah to grant him/her everything that you want for your own self . Also make dua for yourself and ask Allaah to help you removing this hasad from your heart… And Allaah will surely reward you immensely.
DUA OF THE PROPHET (PBUH):
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say in his du’aa’, “Wa’hdi qalbi wa’slul sakheemata sadri (guide my heart and remove ill will from my breast). The phrase “guide my heart” means to the straight path, and “remove ill will from my breast” means take away all insincerity, rancour and hatred.
